Story Telling and Maths

Recently Ben and I have been making up stories as we go along at bed time.  He loves it and we always have a bit of a laugh.

Last night we were talking about a planet. And monsters. And there being a ‘billion’ baddies.  10,000 baddies were then killed. Then another 10,000.  We were trying to keep track of the numbers and trying to say it out loud,  but we both found it difficult.

It was an ideal opportunity for a maths lesson.  So we explored numbers with a calculator (on my iPhone). It was much easier to read and keep track of. Adding, subtracting and multiplying.  Ben read out most of the (very big) numbers, at least until we got to exponents.  He was very confident in his actions.

The best thing was the laughter and excitement of the journey.  He was laughing all the way.

We ended the story with a ‘times zero’.  Which meant there were no baddies left!
