Facebook has scared me

I’ve briefly heard and read about the backlash of Facebook and Beacon, though I admit I do not know the details or technicalities of the issues and concerns. So, you may understand that I was shocked and *scared* that within 30 minutes of posting to review of the Brighton Christmas Geek Dinner I logged into Facebook to find this on my profile page.

The only way I can think that it picked it up is that I have the website listed in my profile.

It’s not that I don’t want or won’t be promoting it through Facebook, it completely surprised me and makes me wonder what else is being picked up about me.

Beacon is terrifying in the Big Brother sort of way. At least they’ve apologized now for its invasiveness and have turned it into an opt in rather than an opt out “service”. If you’ve got it turned on it’s likely your web browsing and shopping habits outside of Facebook are also being monitored to allow for better ad serving.

I’ve not had any run-ins with beacon yet, though I like the idea as long as you can control on an opt-in basis what goes onto your profile. FB screwed up the launch and have a lot of egg and beacon (groan) on their faces.

OTOH, doesn’t the Google cookie tracky your web usage anyway? Remember, privacy is opt-in these days.
